standing where we were

when a love
is too good
we aren’t allowed to keep it
it falls through the fingers
like sand
crumbling, when held
falling away
into the wind
like time
as it leaves us
standing where we were
but now, alone
only its memories, clinging
trapped within the salty water
of our skin
and– there is no god, lovers
but there’s something–
just the shadow of this universe
these bone-dust galaxies
of swirling doubt
that governs
the balance
of everything
that nothing too good
and nothing so bad
long enough
that we’d die
of either
too quickly
or before
at least once–
that a god
might save us
from all this
